Abstract:

Horticulture, shows rapid stride in last few years, has faced the marketing problems due to high perishability of produce. Non perishable crops like wheat maize, paddy, pulses etc given more attention in marketing system of India, while perishable items like fruits and vegetables are mostly ignored. With increasing growth and demand from urban areas many initiative have been taken in marketing of horticultural produce. Under the national horticulture board and National Horticulture Mission many steps have been taken to overcome the problems of marketing in horticulture sector. The gap between farm gate price and price paid by the consumers continues to be high. Sometimes the price of some horticultural produce goes so high that become difficult for consumers to buy the commodity. To check the price of horticultural produce and to provide better returns to farmers marketing have a significant role to play. The present study tries to analyze the status of marketing facilities of horticulture produce in Kathua district. This paper also tries to throw light on employment generation through horticulture marketing sector.
