Abstract:

The present study deals with the comparative assessment of the Physicochemical characteristics of underground and surface water (Pond) of the Khagaria District, Bihar. Different physicochemical parameters (TDS, pH, Iron, Total hardness, Alkalinity, Chloride, Calcium, Arsenic, and Magnesium) were determined during the month of March to analyze and compare the underground water and Surface water (Pond) quality. Collected samples were analyzed according to APHA (2005) for different physicochemical parameters, and the results were compared with standard values prescribed by ISI-IS: 2296 and BIS (1991). The study revealed that the Iron level was much lower in pond water compared to the underground water, which is much above the Desirable or permissible limits. The TDS of pond water is much lower than Handpump water. The total hardness of pond water was much lower than underground water. The alkalinity of pond water was found to be between 100-160 mg/l. Whereas the alkalinity of underground water ranged from 240-360 mg/l.
