Abstract:

The paper investigates a closed-loop control algorithm for a Modular Multi-Level Converter-based system in the elimination of harmonics, mitigation of voltage imbalance, reactive and active power compensation, and improving the power quality of a grid having an Electric Arc Furnace as load. The submodule voltages are balanced to reduce stress on semiconductors and prevent module saturation. The effectiveness of the system is analyzed with a MATLAB/SIMULINK-based simulation. Simulation results indicate mitigation of current harmonics and flicker reduction with MMC.
